Data sources and attribution
OpenStreetMap
Campsites, motorhome aires, motorhome parking, sanitary dump stations and water points are © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0.
We select OpenStreetMap objects tagged tourism=camp_site, tourism=caravan_site, amenity=parking with motorhome=yes|designated, amenity=sanitary_dump_station and amenity=water_point, then normalise fees, services, capacity, height limits and opening hours. Places marked private or disused are left out.
Share-alike
Our places database is a derivative database of OpenStreetMap. Under the ODbL, if you publicly use or share a database derived from ours you must make it available under the ODbL too, and keep the attribution "© OpenStreetMap contributors". Maps and pages we produce from it (produced works) carry that attribution. We intend to publish our derived places database under the ODbL as a download.

Fixing data
Every place page links to the object on OpenStreetMap with an "Edit on OpenStreetMap" link. Corrections made there reach Campervan Atlas at the next import.
GeoNames
Countries, regions and towns come from GeoNames, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. For the United Kingdom and Ireland we use counties (GeoNames admin level 2) as regions. Last imported 8 October 2026.
Map tiles
Interactive maps use vector tiles and styles from OpenFreeMap, built from OpenStreetMap data (© OpenMapTiles, © OpenStreetMap contributors). Static map previews on our pages are drawn from our own copy of OpenStreetMap data.
Recreation.gov (RIDB)
Campgrounds in the United States listed "via Recreation.gov" come from the Recreation Information Database (RIDB), data source: ridb.recreation.gov. We use RIDB's public data download under the RIDB API Access Agreement. Reservable campgrounds link to their page on Recreation.gov; others link to the managing agency's own website.
Federal agencies provide RIDB data and are responsible for its quality; some of it may be missing or incomplete. We don't use Recreation.gov photos. Campervan Atlas is not affiliated with or endorsed by Recreation.gov, its operator or the U.S. Government.
Photos
Photos of places, towns, regions and countries come from Wikimedia Commons. We find them by location (photos geotagged near a place or a town centre) and through the image Wikidata gives for a town, region or country. We only use photos whose licence allows reuse on a public website: CC0, public domain, CC BY and CC BY-SA (any version). We don't use photos licensed for non-commercial use only or with no derivatives, photos reproduced under fair use, or photos marked as restricted by a lack of freedom of panorama. We also skip portraits and photos of people, maps, flags and artwork.
Every photo carries a credit next to it: the author, linked to the photo's page on Wikimedia Commons, and its licence, linked to the licence text. Small thumbnails in lists are credited in a "Photo credits" list on the same page.
What a photo shows
- On a place page, a photo counts as a photo of that place only when it was taken within about 150 m of it and Wikimedia Commons names the place in the file's title or categories. Every other photo is labelled "Nearby", with what it shows and how far away it was taken.
- Photos on town, region and country pages are captioned with what they show, from the title or description on Wikimedia Commons.
- The small photos on the campervan, motorhome, caravan and campsite hire pages are marked "Illustrative photo". They show the kind of vehicle or site, never a particular listing.
How we use them
We download each photo once, make smaller copies (400, 800 and 1600 pixels wide, WebP format) and serve them from our own servers on Cloudflare. We don't crop, retouch, filter or add anything to the photos. Resizing and changing the file format are technical changes that Creative Commons licences allow without creating an adaptation, so every copy stays under the photo's original licence. Embedded camera data, including GPS location, is removed. If you reuse one of these photos, use the original on Wikimedia Commons and follow its licence. CC BY-SA requires anything you adapt from it to be shared under the same licence.
Some decorative category photos may come from Pexels, under the Pexels License, credited "Photo by {name} on Pexels". They are never used as photos of a specific place.
If you are the author of a photo and would like it credited differently or removed, please contact us.
Partner listings
Vehicles and campsites for hire are supplied by approved partners through our Partner API. Each listing names the partner and the time it was last updated. Partners are responsible for the accuracy of their listings. Ratings from partners are not shown as review stars.
