Crit'Air stickers for motorhomes and campervans
Any vehicle driving in a French low-emission zone (ZFE-m), or during pollution-peak traffic restrictions, needs a Crit'Air certificate, and that includes foreign-registered motorhomes. Order it only from certificat-air.gouv.fr: €3.11 plus €2.00 postage outside France. The 2025 law to abolish the zones was struck down on 21 May 2026, so they remain in force: Lyon enforces its zone, while Grand Paris issues no fines until 31 December 2026.[2][1][7][10][9]

Do I need one?
Yes, if you will drive or park in one of France's low-emission zones (zones à faibles émissions mobilité, ZFE-m), or drive while a prefect has imposed differentiated or alternating traffic during a pollution episode. The restrictions apply to all road vehicles, including those registered abroad.[1][2]
A sticker from another country's scheme does not exempt you.[1]
Pollution-peak restrictions are separate from the zones: they can be added on top of a zone's rules, and the sticker is required for them wherever they are declared.[3][2]
Which category is my motorhome?
There are six stickers: the green "E" (electric and hydrogen), then 1 to 5; vehicles too old for a class are "non classé". The class depends on the vehicle's category and fuel, then on its Euro standard (field V.9 of the registration certificate) or, failing that, its date of first registration.[5][2]
The arrêté uses EU vehicle categories: M1 is a car, N1 a light commercial vehicle, and M2, M3, N2 and N3 are heavy vehicles, buses and coaches. The category is shown in field J or J.1 of the registration certificate.[5][1]
| Euro standard (diesel) | Cars (M1) and vans (N1) | Heavy vehicles (M2, M3, N2, N3) |
|---|---|---|
| Euro 6 / VI | Crit'Air 2 | Crit'Air 2 |
| Euro 5 / V | Crit'Air 2 | Crit'Air 3 |
| Euro 4 / IV | Crit'Air 3 | Crit'Air 4 |
| Euro 3 / III | Crit'Air 4 | Crit'Air 5 |
| Euro 2 / II | Crit'Air 5 | Non classé |
| Euro 1 / I and older | Non classé | Non classé |
No official text we found names motorhomes. Our reading of the arrêté: a motorhome registered as M1 uses the car column, and only an M2, M3, N2 or N3 registration puts it in the heavy-vehicle column. Check the category on your registration document before you order.[5][1]
How to order (official site only)
certificat-air.gouv.fr is the only official site that issues Crit'Air certificates. For a vehicle registered abroad the application is online only, and you need a legible photo or scan of the registration certificate. The sticker is posted to the address you give, usually within about ten days.[2][1]
The official price is €3.11 plus postage: €3.85 in total for a French address and €2.00 postage outside France. Other websites, with no link to the ministry, sell the sticker for much more than the real price.[1][2][3]
Where it's enforced (October 2026)
In 2025 Parliament voted to repeal the low-emission zones in a bill to simplify economic life, but on 21 May 2026 the Conseil constitutionnel struck that article out because it had been adopted by a procedure contrary to the Constitution. The zones remain in force.[7][10]
There are 25 zones in mainland France. Only two (Paris and Lyon) apply the stricter regime; in the others, rules vary by city.[3][8]
- Grand Paris (inside the A86 ring road, the A86 itself excluded): Crit'Air 3, 4, 5 and non-classé vehicles are restricted, 8:00 to 20:00 on weekdays for cars and vans and every day for heavy vehicles. No fines are issued from 1 January to 31 December 2026, a teaching year.[8][9]
- Lyon: since 1 January 2026 only vehicles with a Crit'Air 0 (E), 1 or 2 sticker may drive and park in the zone. From 1 January 2028 the central zone also excludes Crit'Air 2.[11][8]
- Grenoble: Crit'Air 3 and above cars are banned on weekdays, 7:00 to 19:00. Montpellier restricts Crit'Air 3 and above; Toulouse Crit'Air 4 and above.[8]
The full list of zones, with each city's current rules, is on the government's mieuxrespirerenville.gouv.fr portal.[8]
Fines
Driving in a zone without a sticker, or with a class that isn't allowed, is a 3rd-class offence for light vehicles (a fixed fine of €68) and a 4th-class offence for heavy vehicles (€135). Displaying a sticker that doesn't match the vehicle is also a 4th-class offence.[1][11]
Service-public uses a 3.5-tonne gross weight threshold for "light vehicles", so a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes may be fined as a heavy vehicle. We have not found an official text that settles this for motorhomes.[4]
